If you are a Camaro enthusiast, chances are you have dreams of owning, or perhaps just having a ride in, a real-live ZL1 427 Camaro. In 1969, only 69 of these behemoths were built under the COPO program. Most were delivered to Fred Gibb Chevrolet in LaHarpe, Illinois, but a handful managed to be delivered to a select few other performance dealers. This is one of the cars that Fred Gibb sent back to GM.
Mark Hassett has owned many performance cars over the years including several Yenko's, Baldwin Motion creations and more, but his ZL1 certainly must be one of his favorites. With a mere 8,000 miles on the odometer, Mr. Hassett is the third owner. Sold new in February 1971 through Sutliff Chevrolet in Harrisburg, PA. after sitting on the lot for far too long. The Sutliff folks even asked racer Bruce Larsen to exercise it at the track, hoping to lure a buyer. After this didn't work, they added a rear deck spoiler and a set of Rally wheels and eventually it found a home.
The Nickey Chicago Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals is proud to have Mr. Hassett's #35 ZL1 Camaro as part of our “Class of 69” 40th Anniversary Invitational display. This beautiful ZL1 will be shown alongside other “top dog” 1969 Muscle Machines including a Hemi Dodge Daytona, a Boss 429 Mustang and other must see rarities November 21-2, 2009 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center.
Our Thanks go out to the Hassett family for their continued support of what we do and for sharing this bit of Muscle Car history with us.
