PROVING THEY AREN'T ALL TRAILER QUEENS;
PURE STOCK MUSCLE CAR DRAGS
Unlike some others, September isn't my favorite month. You see, September means that October is near, and that means we get booted out of the marina and boating season is officially over. Of course, being an optimistic kind of guy, there is something I always look forward to in September, and that is the Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Races.
At the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals show, you will always see literally hundreds of cars that many may call "trailer queens". These cars could be considered art, as they are meticulously restored, and in many cases far better than when they left the assembly line. The specialized folks that restore them spend countless hours researching each and every detail, right down to the thread counts on the bolts. Yes, many of these cars can be considered trailer queens.
But then, if you have been to the MCACN show over the past ten years, you have seen a stellar block of American Muscle Cars that defy description. Every one could easily take home trophies at most shows, and they all stand tall. The difference is, they are used for exactly what they were originally intended for. Hemi's, LS6's, Supercharged Studebakers, big-blocks, small-blocks, you name it and you will most likely see it at the Pure Stock Drags. Not only that, but you will also see the racers sharing tips and tools and actually helping each other out. Seasoned racers help those racing for the first time and the amount of knowledge shared is really awesome.
This week the PSMCD racers hit the Mid Michigan Motorplex in Stanton, Michigan. This is a really cool track, with a bit of a nostalgic feel. Lots of grass, cool aluminum bleachers and a sticky track make for non-stop fun. Dan and Dennis Jenson along with Lyndon Hughes do a great job keeping things running and overseeing the rules. And with close to 200 cars running, it is always a blast to watch! Friday is tech inspection and bracket day, while Saturday brings non-stop heads up action. And let me tell you, there is nothing neater than seeing a Hemi 'cuda run an LS6 Chevelle down the track, each complete with bias-ply Polyglas tires and full exhaust systems.
So how does it work? Well here are the rules, right from the PSMCDR website:
The most important rule: Your musclecar must be stock, except for the modifications outlined below. If a modification is not mentioned, keep it original! Remember, the goal is to have fun drag racing your musclecar. See old friends, make new ones, and enjoy all the cool cars on the track!
For 1955 to 1979 musclecars built in United States and Canadian assembly plants with a minimum warranty of 12 months and 12,000 miles. Factory lightweight cars built for sanctioned drag racing and dealership-built/modified cars are not eligible to participate. Cars must be factory equipped with a minimum of four-barrel carburetion, dual exhaust, and other factory-installed equipment that promotes a high-performance intent and image. Cars are paired up based on time trial e.t.s and compete in a best-of-three heads-up shootout.
The Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag races take place Friday, September 13, and Saturday, September 14. We will be there both days and as always, we are proud to host a big display of these cars at the upcoming MCACN show, November 23-24. Coordinated by Donny Brass, who races his own (real) 1966 L79 Corvette, Donny has some big plans for the MCACN display this year that truly takes things to another level. You'll be able to see the cars, meet the drivers and learn how you can be a part of the action. This is always one of the most fun and interactive parts of our show. Special Thanks go out to Donny and all the folks that help in making this a great feature.
