MCACN 2025 Olds W31 Invitational: The Small Block Screamers

The Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals show is known for spotlighting the best of the best when it comes to American Muscle. Of course, you will always see a wide variety of Hemi's, Shelby's and COPO's each and every year, and 2025 will be another stellar year for these gems. On the other hand, we love to shine the spotlight on some of the lesser known Muscle Machines, and that is what we are going to do here.

While all Oldsmobile fans love seeing the many prime 442's and W30's at MCACN, it is always a treat when we see the W30's "little brother", which is the small block W31's. These cars have really come into their own the past few years, and they certainly deserve the recognition. So what exactly is a W31? Well, start with a Cutlass, and then check the right boxes.

The W-31 package began with Oldsmobile’s version of the 350-cu.in. V-8. Add the high performance 308 camshaft with .474-inch lift. and what the brochure calls “select fit” components. This includes internal engine pieces that were chosen to provide the optimum weights and tolerances in order to meet the factory’s “blueprint” of the small-block. Special pistons, bearings and the crankshaft were all upgraded. The connecting rods were also specific to the W-31 engine, and are identified by the last three digits of the casting part number, which, somewhat ironically, are 442.

A newly designed set of cylinder heads, designated #6, are also part of the W-31 package and are exceptionally rare. Add an aluminum intake manifold with a “performance calibrated” 750-CFM Rochester Quadrajet and the W25 low-restriction air cleaner assembly. To take it a step further, add a new-for-1970 air induction system with the twin scoops on top of a fiberglass hood with chrome hold-downs.

With compression bumped from a standard 10.25 to 10.5:1, horsepower was up to an impressive 325 at 5,400 RPM, with 360-lbs.ft. of torque. Add the N10 dual-exhaust system, as well as an upgraded cooling system with a six-blade fan and fan clutch and you have quite a package! It is said that a mere 1,352 W31's were produced in 1970, making them a true rarity these days.

We are pleased to announce that you will be able to see an entire row of these cool cars at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals show as a special "display within the display" for our Class of 1970, Presented by NCM Insurance, November 22-23. We have both 4-speed and automatics in coupe and sedan body styles. You'll see several that are meticulously restored to Concours standards and even one that has been lovingly preserved, totally original and unrestored. Whew...what a group!

This week we will be updating our website with many of the new Invitational and Special displays listed. We have some really cool stuff in store for you and some truly unexpected twists. Keeping the show fresh and unexpected is always a primary goal. Of course, popular MCACN features like our Barn Finds & Hidden Gems, Vintage Certification, Corvette Central Triple Diamond, Shelby & Mustang Pinnacle and Camaro Legends return with all new cars. Please keep an eye on our facebook and instagram pages and help us spread the word. We have so much going on that we post something nearly every day!
