Was It Over? 2024 Malaise Era Muscle Invitational

2023 Malaise Era Invitational

We can all agree that 68-71 represents the truly prime years for American Muscle. Sure, when the Muscle Car was invented will always be an arguable point that stirs up the emotions of many, but was it really over after '71? Well....in many ways yes, but let's keep an open mind here...

Several years ago we experimented with a new concept, led by MCACN team member Brad Schroeder. Our inaugural Malaise Era Muscle Invitational was a HUGE hit. While some may have groaned and quoted the subpar horsepower ratings, others loved reliving some memories. So what do we define as the Malaise Era? While opinions differ, we are going to run with 1973-1989. Government regulations, gas shortages, increased insurance premiums and other reasons brought forth big changes in the auto industry. Wild stripes, spoilers and lovers replaced high displacement gas guzzling engines. Bottom line, however, is that there were still a few really cool cars out there and if you knew your way around an order sheet, you could even create something with at least a bit more oomph.

*The Malaise Era- an era where multiple oil crises affected cars being produced

The past several years we have played host to Malaise Era Roadrunners, Super Coupes, Mustang II's, Can Ams, V8 Monzas' and Vegas, Z/28's, Turbo Buicks, Trans Ams, several Pace Cars and more, including some truly unexpected treasures. This year we are going to spotlight the Camaros and Firebirds of '74-89. Think about it; there really are some cool F-Bodies that left the assembly line during this time period with a performance twist! And of course, there were the '73 and '74 Super Duty Trans Ams and Formulas, which are among the most sought-after examples of Pontiac muscle, bar none!

We have a really neat lineup already, but if you have a prime example we would love to have you be a part of this fun display. As always, must be the "Best of the Best" and priority is always given to rarely (if ever!) shown cars. To pre-qualify, send good, clear pictures and information to bashton426@gmail.com. Perhaps there are even a few Dealer Supercars that represent the era that would like to join us? Nickey, Baldwin-Motion, Mr. Norm and even Yenko were still in the game!

BUSY SUMMER: While I am saddened by the reality of summer being almost over, I am excited about the upcoming Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals show, November 23-24. We have so much going on, as we will share in the upcoming weeks. And as always, while the cars get us together under one roof, it is always the people and the awesome stories that are shared that make our show the true treasure that it is. Our hobby is running at fever pitch right now. I am seeing more young enthusiasts, more "high" end collectors stepping up and more cars coming out of the fields and garages than ever. The future looks bright for MCACN and the hobby!

MECUM Monterey: Whew...what can we say but WoWoWoW! Dana, Frank and the team blasted it out of the park yet again, smashing records and making history. Of course, the MCACN shown Hemi Daytona certainly was a home run and while it may have surprised many, it certainly shows that the interest in owning a premium collector car is certainly being considered among those who can afford to not only enjoy, but hopefully share them with all of us. Congrats Mecum Auctions!

CAR ENTRY: While many of our classes and special displays are already full, along with nearly all of our Concours judging classes, we do have openings in some areas. Email pictures and information to bashton426@gmail.com for consideration. As always, looking for the Best of the Best and the Rarest of the Rare with priority given to rarely (or never!) shown cars. A few we would like to add; Factory 8V Fords and Mercurys, perhaps a Little Red Express, Pontiac Grand Prixs and 2+2's, some BIG Body Muscle (any make) and well...tell us what you would like to show. (*All Pontiac Concours classes are Sold Out)
