Incredible Original Altered Wheelbase Mopars To Be Featured at MCACN

It is true that the primary focus of the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals show is the finest and rarest examples of 60’s and 70’s American Muscle and Corvettes. Of course, we are committed to making sure we always keep you interested by adding some spice to the recipe. They can’t all be factory stock and showroom fresh! Sometimes they are completely off the wall, like the ‘48 Tucker or the vintage VW Bus we have featured in the lobby in the past. Other times, it makes sense and tells a story. That is the case with an incredible pair of Mopars we have joining us this year when we return to the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, (suburban Chicago), Illinois, November 18-19.

To see an original Altered Wheelbase Mopar drag car up close and in person is a real treat. What we have for you are two of them; the 1965 Plymouth known as the UFO and the 1965 Dodge known as The Hemi Honker. And talk about stories and history!

The UFO was recently found somewhat complete and living in Canada. This car was originally campaigned by the Tignanelli Brothers of the Shadowoods Auto Center out of Detroit, Michigan. Shadowoods was known for their expertise in building Chrysler race engines, and Tom Tignanelli served as the driver. This car was one of the earliest and wildest of the original cars to run in the new C/SX class. Powered by a 426 Hemi, the beautiful gold and black paint was complimented by the red tinted plexiglas windows making it a real stand out. It was also the only A/WB Mopar to run a far ahead of its time Aero front end cap at one time. This car was recently meticulously restored using only period correct parts.

As if that isn’t enough to get your heart pumping, right beside it will be Bud Faubel’s Hemi Honker ‘65 Altered wheelbase Dodge. Now when it comes to stories, this one has ‘em! Let’s start with the one about Bud driving this car home from the Amblewagon facilities in Detroit to his home in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania in rather cold weather. Yes...again this is the actual car that Bud ran throughout the ‘65 AHRA and NHRA season. Notable victories include winning $1,000.00 in cash and prizes at one event and countless other victories. By the way...did we mention that before Bud took to the strip he was a fighter pilot and occasional NASCAR racer? Stories...we’ve got them! Jim Kramer restored this one, and it is like stepping back in time.

The Altered Wheelbase cars would eventually morph into what we now know as Funny Cars. It is often said that the term “Funny Car” was one that came to be because people often referred to these cars as funny looking due to their shortened wheelbases and unusual wheel placement. The fact is, the drag racing world would be changed forever and we will be able to get up close and personal with two of the most significant examples in existence. Special Thanks go out to Clark Rand and Jim Kramer who are the owners of these cars. Both have been restored to as raced back in the day, and they are truly sights to behold. We encourage you to talk to Jim and Clark and their crews, as they have encyclopedic knowledge of what these cars are all about.
