Mecum Team Returns to Indy for 33rd Original Spring Classic!
If you are anything like me, you may be going a bit "stir crazy" staying home more than usual. Fortunately, I was able to hit the Mecum Eddie Vannoy Collection auction in North Carolina and the awesome Chryslers at Carlisle show this past weekend. I am happy to say both were hugely successful. Of course, both the Mecum team and the Carlisle Events crew made plenty of necessary adjustments to make sure we were all safe, (as we will do at MCACN), but the best part was seeing plenty of respectful people making a real effort to "social distance" and wear masks. This takes some getting used to, but let's face it, we all need to do what we have to do to stay safe and put an end to this fiasco.
This week we head over to Dana Mecums 33rd Spring Classic at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. This year Dana and the crew have expanded to nine full days, with nearly as many cars crossing the block as they had in Kissimmee. There are some really great cars and trucks hitting the block, but several really stand out among the many prime offerings.
A few years ago when we had the Cars of Carroll Shelby Invitational as our "Red Carpet" display up front, we had the honor of hosting John Atzbach. To say John has the finest collection of Shelby automobiles is one thing, but his related memorabilia is truly off the charts. We often use the term "best of the best" and "rarest of the rare" and that is exactly what John has assembled over many years. His dedication to all things Shelby is unsurpassed, much like Steven Juliano's dedication to all things Rapid Transit System and Scat Pack. John spent many years and countless hours researching and collecting, and a majority of his collection is selling this week. Among the cars; the '65 GT350R Prototype that we had right up front in our Shelby display, a '66 Shelby convertible, one of four built that you also saw at MCACN, his 289 Competition Cobra, CSX 2487, and to make things even more exciting, John is offering several of his Lamborghini's too! But that is just part of the story; the Road Art being offered from Johns collection covers the gamut; signs, models, jackets, small items, big items....if it is Shelby and real, chances are it's crossing the block. And to say the quality is the best is an understatement. Again like Steven's collection, this is without a doubt a must see/must bid opportunity. We wish John the very best and want to again express our sincere appreciation to him for showing several of his cars with us. Good Luck, John!
Another notable offering and MCACN alumnus car is our good friend Ricky Greers 440 powered Dodge Daytona. Again, this is a truly "best of the best" offering, and as you probably know, Mopar Wing Cars of this quality are few and far between. If you are in the market for a prime Daytona, take a close look at this one and get ready to bid!
This is just a sampling of what the Mecum crew has in store for us. The auction started this past Friday the 10th and runs all week until the 18th. We will have a display set up to talk MCACN, (YES...we are still on track to return to Rosemont, November 21-22!) and we have well over 300 cars already signed up. Most of our special and Invitational displays are already full, so be prepared to see our General Motors "Top Dawgs" Invitational, featuring LS6, Stage 1, Ram Air IV and W30's by the red carpet, our Mopar T/A and AAR Invitational, Sponsored by The Wellborn Museum, our fun Barn Finds and Hidden Gems, Presented by Miller Auto Care, Restomods and Stock Restorations, the Class of 1970 Invitational, Presented by NCM Insurance, (well over 100 cars in this one!), the Buick G.S. Invitational, the Day 2 Invitational, Presented by Trailex, our Ford Pinnacle Competition and of course our Corvette Central Triple Diamond Gallery and Competition. This is just some of what we have lined up this year, so stay tuned for more info in the coming weeks!
